Is Playing GTA 6 Cheating? Rockstar Says the Romance Is Optional

TikTok calls GTA 6 dating “cheating”, but Rockstar’s Rob Nelson says Jason and Lucia’s romance is optional. Here’s what the studio actually said.
Is Playing GTA 6 Cheating? Rockstar Says the Romance Is Optional
A debate about GTA 6’s relationship system has been spreading on TikTok since Rockstar’s extended look at the game. Some creators argue that a partner who plays is crossing a line. Kotaku reports that a few of those videos have reached around 5 million views, but most of the comments disagree.

Rockstar’s own words suggest the feature is much less demanding than the clips imply.
What Rockstar Has Said
In an interview with IGN, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said Jason and Lucia will always back each other up in the story and in the action. Spending time together to grow the relationship is up to the player. His message to anyone not interested: “Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you.”
Nelson explained that the story is built so the pair stay together for most of the game. At minimum, they get through things as partners in crime. He added that Rockstar wanted to offer emotional weight to players who want it, along with a way to opt out for those who don’t.
How the Romance Grows
According to Nelson, the open world of Leonida gives plenty of room for shared moments. He mentioned robbing places together, holding hands, visiting a zoo, scuba diving, parachuting, beach walks and kayaking.
He said that playing the two as a unit makes you feel protective of them, something Rockstar didn’t expect when development began. IGN’s own summary is that players who skip the sappy side won’t be penalised.
What Other Outlets Have Reported
Some sites say the system also includes texting and that ignoring messages can hurt the bond. IGN’s interview coverage doesn’t mention this, and at least one outlet warns that such claims aren’t backed by Rockstar. Treat it as unconfirmed.
What Is Still Unknown
Rockstar hasn’t said whether players can actively trigger intimate scenes, or how deep the relationship system goes.
Bottom Line
The viral claim that you have to keep a virtual relationship going doesn’t match what Rockstar has said. The “cheating” argument is a social media interpretation, not a design statement from the studio. GTA 6 launches on 19 November.
